I recently came across a great post by my favourite Canadian food blog, SmokySweet, on holiday gift ideas for foodies. On their list were Bittered Sling extracts made by Kale & Nori, a collaboration between award-winning bartender, Lauren Mote, and chef, Jonathan Chovancek. To paraphrase SmokySweet, Lauren is a bit of a mad scientist with botanicals, and the result is an amazing line of beautiful bitters that can be used both for cooking and cocktails.
As a cocktail aficionado myself (who celebrates palate & potion with equal gusto!), I decided to go hunting for these Bittered Sling beauties, and my search took me to The Modern Bartender near Stadium in Vancouver. Not only can you find the Bittered Sling line here, you can also find entire ranges of rare bitters that are difficult to find elsewhere (whether you are in Vancouver, Paris, or Buenos Aires)! The Modern Bartender also offers a great selection of cocktail tools, glasses, guides, and everything you need to help you make that Perfect Cocktail. Given it's close to my idea of cocktail paradise, I now plan to make it a regular stop of mine every time I return to Vancouver.
This time around, I happily walked out with 4 different bitters that I plan to give away as a present. (At C$30 per bottle, they're not cheap, but their potency means that they should last you a long time.) Although I'm gifting them, I must admit that they are also secretly for me ... because it will just give me an excuse to ask that special someone to concoct delicious cocktails pour moi! :)

One of your best reviews yet. I did review the bitters book by Mark Bitterman if memory serves me correctly; it is a lovely book filled with all that one could want to know about bitters. I would love to purchase and keep stock of some handy bitters but income escapes me. I am thinking bitters are to be treated like brandy. One feels a cold coming on and so they reach for some brandy or bitters or Vodka. Kudos!
ReplyDeleteThank you for stopping by! You have a lovely blog as well :)
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for the kind words, Ainee! I was really looking fwd to writing this review but don't think that there are so many people who are as passionate about cocktails as they are, say, about food or some of the other things that I have posted about previously. But no matter; I was so happy to have discovered this place and wanted to share it with the world! But I agree with you - it is pricey to get bitters. They're just perfect for the winter but they can be a rather big investment too.
ReplyDeleteA cunning plan with a gift that gives back!
ReplyDeleteLOL! I'm conniving like that!

ReplyDeleteHi there. No, I've never visited that blog before, but I've just stopped by and it's lovely! I noticed it's a friend / colleague (?) of Carin Olsson of Paris in Four Months as well. :) Thanks for the recommendation!
