Bonnes Résolutions

I'm a little late on my New Year resolutions, but this time around, I really wanted to take some time to reflect on them before committing myself.  So after a lot of thinking (mainly done airborne, at the airport, or during long métro rides), I've finally come up with a list that I think will make me a smarter, healthier, happier, more creative human being who also contributes more to the community around her.  So in no particular order, here are my bonnes résolutions pour 2013.

1 :: Be a more positive person rather than harping on negative details or difficulties.  Likewise, surround myself with more optimistic people and stay away from those who bring negative energy.

2 :: Speak to my French partner 80% of the time in French.  (I'm tempted to say 100% but am also too scared to commit fully!  I shall have to discuss with him how we are going to enforce this new New Year rule...)

3 :: Take time to set up, furnish, and decorate my new Parisian apartment to make it the cosy, loving, positive creative space that I want it to be.

4 :: Cook healthy meals more often at home.  Meaning less bread, rice, and easy carbs and more fresh meat, fish, poultry, and vegetables.  (Something more easily said than done in the land of baguettes, cheese, and pastries!)

5 :: Fix my right shoulder (where my Canadian physiotherapist thinks I've injured my rotator cuff) so that I can finally go snowboarding, dancing, and running again!

6 :: Taking no. 5 into consideration, exercise at least 2x a week and eventually get myself to a point where I can consider training for the Paris Marathon or even Half-Marathon in 2014.

7 :: Finally get my wisdom teeth taken out - they have been starting to hurt so sorely!  :*(

8 :: Pay off my debts to zero by the end of the year!

9 :: Find a way to spend more time with the dearest friends that I have, whether they are in Paris, London, Dubai, Delhi, or New York.

10 :: Make an effort to plan a couple of super cheap weekend trips to places I've never been to before.  At the top of the list are: Munich (Germany), Florence (Italy), Lisbon (Portugal), Sofia (Bulgaria), Bucharest (Romania), Tallinn (Estonia), Edinburgh (Scotland), and Corsica (France).

11 :: Take driving lessons.  Finally.  Even it means doing so in French.  (A decade of living in supercities New York, London, and Paris since I've come of "driving age" meant that I never really needed to learn how to do it.)

12 :: Learn to ski so that a) I can live out one last big "physical learning adventure" in my 20s and b) Raphael doesn't leave me stranded on a flat plain with my snowboard somewhere near Chamonix.

13 :: Read the books that I've outlined in my 2013 Book List.  Also finish reading half of the French books that Raphael gave me in 2011.

14 :: Finish my book project - difficult birth that it is.

15 :: Attend at least 2/3 of my Ecole du Louvre classes.  (With my full-time job, side projects, and travels, it's a challenging thing to do!)

16 :: Take Spanish classes in Paris.  Speak Spanish more often with my (Spanish!) father and my middle sister who lives in Barcelona.

17 :: Work with a children's charity for a few weeks this year.

18 :: Be a more active mentor to the university students that are my mentees in New York, even if it means doing so from across the Atlantic.

19 :: Take some time to assess whether the Canadian start-up project with Mama is feasible and, if yes, make a business launch plan before the end of the year.

20 :: Now that all of my three siblings and I live in different cities (Vancouver, Toronto, Barcelona, Paris), make an effort to email or call each one of them at least 1x a week.  Similarly, call my parents at home 2x a week to keep them company after their first taste of Empty Nest Syndrome!

**

And that closes off my long but painfully thought-out list of New Year's resolutions for 2013!  I'm really looking forward to a more positive, creative, productive, healthy, and loving year ahead of me, whether I am in Paris, Buenos Aires, Vancouver, or elsewhere in this wonderful wide world.

  2. Good luck with the list! Having done #8 this year myself, i can tell you it's a wonderful, slightly giddying experience! With #10 though, Edinburgh? Really? Maybe it's because I live in Glasgow that's much bigger and better than the other place, but really?! ;o)

  3. Very cool running blog!! I ran the NYC Marathon in 2008 and the London Marathon in 2010 - they are amazing experiences! Best of luck with your training!

  4. I can't WAIT to do #8! It's going to be freeing. With #10, I'm afraid I simply know more about Edinburgh because of the castle and the theatre festival and NYE! Do you think Glasgow is more worth a visit, if I had to pick between the two?

  5. travel always helps the resolution juices flow, doesn't it? personally, it's because often the worst comes out in me when I travel and then I think "OH. must be a nicer person. make a note!" haha :)

never been to Glasgow but loved Edinburgh! you should also add DC to that list... hehe!

  6. I've actually never been to DC, even throughout the 5 years I lived in NY! (I know, it's shameful.) But I think I would need more than a weekend to travel to DC properly. :)

  7. Happy New Year/ Urte Berri On !!! How is it that someone so young can be so wise? IF ever you are near Biarritz I would love to meet you. Many of my Basque ancestors went to Argentina…

  8. Wow! That's quite a list. LOL! Good luck with it!

A visit to Florence is a must- put that at the very top of the list!! Both Lisbon & Oporto are on our bucket list, so we'd have a very hard time choosing just one for a weekend.

    Best for 2013,

  9. Wow, you have quite a list here!

We speak English and Mandarin at home (90% and /10%), I wish I could speak French more because I think I'm losing my fluency! Ironic, isn't it!

I don't really have bonnes résolutions (ou mauvaises résolutions!) but I always try to improve little things and experience new stuff.

  10. I'm doing #7 on Jan 15th. And I super recommend München for a summer weekender for the glockenspiel, Deutsche Museum, Pinakothek Museum, Schloss Nymphenburg, the beer halls (I dare you to take a maß), amusement at the Englischgarten, etc. etc.

  11. Thank you for sharing your New Years's Resolutions. Writing them down is the first step to fulfillment. Bonne Chance!

  12. Thank you for such kind words. I wish I could actually be much wiser than I am! I would love to come down to Biarritz someday. It is on my (other) list of places to visit (in France). I hope to do so before summertime this year. That's so lovely that you are part Basque! It's a wonderful heritage to have. My father has Andalusian heritage from the south of Spain. Close but not the same. :)

  13. Florence is definitely at the top of my list! :) I didn't think about Oporto this time but would you strongly recommend it for a visit (vs. or with Lisbon)?

  14. It's not actually as frightening a list as it may initially seem as many of them are things I have already started to do. But writing them down helps me orient myself and it's good always to have this list to go back to as I go through this coming year. :) It is my way of improving little things and experiencing new stuff. :)

  15. I'M SO JEALOUS. I am desperately trying to schedule one this week. I shall find out if I can be successful tomorrow! My face has been on FIRE for the last few weeks... :*(

  16. Thank you, Pamela! I hope it works :)

  17. You truly have a fabulous life - I'm half jealous and then I realize that by most standards mine is pretty awesome as well! It seems everyone's been neglecting their exercise this past year - I haven't seen one resolutions list without exercise goals. Mine is 3x a week - one week into the New Year and I don't think I've done anything other than yoga, which barely counts!

  18. Ha! This coming from the girl who lives in Sao Paolo - which these days is pretty much everybody's dream! :-D I think you lead quite a charmed life yourself, but I also know (even without knowing you well) that you work hard to have it. As for exercising - it seems to be on everyone's NY list, that's true. 3x is a great resolution; I'm going to start with 2x and see how it goes. :)

Great list of resolutions. I haven't yet given very much thought to mine, so I really should start! I think a few of yours can apply to me, so maybe I'll start with those! :) Happy new year!

  20. Thank you! And don't rush; you should take your time to think about your resolutions. There's no deadline for them in any case! :) Bonne année encore !

  21. Lovely resolutions! Happy new year!

  22. But hey, you've kept up your fab-ness despite it all. ;) And as for travelling in DE, I recommend looking up for the Romantische Straße guide, because of the gorgeous epic architecture of the castles.

  23. Good luck with it all!

  24. Well we're all about getting to know a place, and we DO have much farther to come than you when you're on the Continent (!), so unless we had a month it's hard for us to imagine seeing Lisbon and Oporto on the same vacation!

Oporto just seems to be one of those smaller cities that has hit its stride and come of age all of a sudden. Perhaps its liberating for a city to be just a little in the shadow of its bigger and more famous capital. We've not yet been, but we're dying to. Here's a link to a blog we like covering all that's hot there right now:

  26. That's an impressive list but I'm sure you'll be able to tackle it :)

  27. About resolution # 20 : the "empty nest syndrome" parents also have resolution # 3, 4 , 6 , 8, 10, 13 etc... so don't call to often or visit too much!

    ReplyDelete
  28. LOL don't worry, I err on the side of not calling enough rather than calling. I left home at 16 and my family is super close in the Latin way so we are used to calling each other almost every other day despite the 9-hour time difference! And as for visiting too often - alas, not possible given the geographic distance. I try to go to Canada about 1x or 2x a year, and my parents come to Europe 1x or 2x a year also.

    ReplyDelete
  29. That's a great list. Your #11 is my everlasting resolution: Since I won't need a car as long as I am in NYC this is permanently deferred until I leave. Besides you, I am the only person I know who can't drive..
In any case, the only proper goal for 2013 is to keep my sanity in check as I plan my December wedding - and that's no easy feat!

    ReplyDelete
  30. YAY! Someone else over the age of 20 aside from me doesn't know how to drive! LOL But god I must admit it's such a pain! Can't wait to get it over with!

    ReplyDelete
  31. I'll be happy with an 80% hit rate :) Is that a bad way to approach NY resolutions? LOL
