Moving Day

Today I moved into my lovely new apartment near Place des Vosges in the Marais.  I woke up at 7am to brave the snow and cold to cross the city and meet the moving guys at my place of storage.  It took a few hours but by early afternoon, my 40 boxes of books (amongst other boxes of possessions!) made it through the door of my new home.  With the white snow and bluish skies outside, it was even more luminous than I remembered it - and I knew I had made the right choice.  This is the first home since the mews house in London (when I lived with my 3 best girlfriends!) where I really feel that there is a lot of good energy in the space, and that makes me excited to come home.

It's littered with cardboard boxes everywhere at the moment, but I wanted to share some glimpses of it in the meantime, so here is a compilation of a few of the agency photos that I first saw online.  Let these serve as the Before shots!  I'm looking forward to eventually sharing the After.  :)

Last but not least - thanks to everyone who participated in the January Giveaway.  According to Random Number Generator, the winner is ... #9!  UshaJoy, congratulations, and please drop me an email with your mailing address so I can ship you your chocolat chaud à l'ancienne toute de suite !

  2. Oooh moving in cold weather. Challenging. I agree with you about good energy. I've moved a lot and some places have it, some don't. Love the exposed brick and the French doors. I can't wait to see what you do with it! Bon Courage!

  7. It's actually stone walls from the 17th century rather than brick - crazy, no?

  10. I think the photos might make the place look bigger than it actually is! Don't worry - I did my time in a London shoebox before. One of those top floor apartments in an old building in Notting Hill where all the roofs sloped down and you couldn't stand up in the bathtub. I've paid my dues!! :)

  12. Oh I can imagine... though I've always thought those top floor apts had a certain charm (though I can't tell for sure cause I haven't lived in one)... and well despite the size, your new home is beautiful :)

  13. I'm glad you were able to move in so quickly, it must be a big relief! And also nice you have a full kitchen, I read somewhere that most apartments in Paris come with no appliances or cabinets or anything for some legal reason

  14. Yay, congrats on the move! You deserve French citizenship just for finding a suitable place in Paris. Seriously.

  15. 40 boxes of books! I don't think I even have 15 boxes of possessions! But if there's anything it's admirable to have a lot of, it's books. The place looks beautiful!

  16. Yes, many unfurnished places in Paris (and other parts of Europe) come without a "cuisine équipée". That means you have to buy the fridge, oven, dishwasher/washing machine, and sometimes even cupboards - the whole shebang - and install it. And at the end of your tenancy, you have to take it with you. It's quite a pain in the ass, to be honest with you. I have friends who refuse to leave their current apartments because they spent thousands of euros and so many hours of time installing their kitchens. Luckily, more and more often, landlords who renovate their apartments offer unfurnished places with fully equipped kitchens like the one I recently got.

  18. I know - it's the reason my boyfriend and friends got me a Kindle for my birthday last year. With my nomadic lifestyle, it was becoming impossible!
