As I explore my new neighbourhoods of the Marais, the Haut-Marais,
and St-Paul, I shall share with you some of the gems that I come across. My latest and most favourite discovery is Comme à Lisbonne, the Portuguese épicerie located just a few steps from Pozzetto on rue du Roi de Sicile in the Marais. Comme à Lisbonne serves one pastry, and one pastry only: the Pastéis de Nata, a delicate and wonderfully flaky egg tart pastry that is to Lisbon as macarons are to Paris! Its lovely light cream is often sprinkled with cinnamon for completion, and I can attest (after my first, then second, then third consecutive pastéis de nata) that it is absolutely, delightfully delicious.
Aside from the pastéis de nata which are baked fresh in Comme à Lisbonne's downstairs kitchen all throughout the day, this épicerie also offers artisanal food products imported from Portugal - from jams and spreads, to high-quality Tricana fish conserves, to wines from the Duoro Valley and specialty ports and brandies. If you're looking for Portuguese ingredients, or something different to try out in your Parisian kitchen, this is a great cosy little épicerie to visit!
Last but not least, the woman running the shop is an absolutely lovely person. Upon hearing that it would be my first time trying the pastéis de nata (seriously, what was I doing in Portugal during my trip there?!), she was so enthusiastic about describing the pastry and its history to me. And when I said that I would like to take photos of her store, despite the queue out the door, she immediately took some time to rearrange some of the products on the shelves to make sure that I would get the loveliest photos possible in her dim store light. I absolutely adore it when I come across such warm, passionate people in the food industry here in Paris. For that alone, Comme à Lisbonne gets double the (already many!) points for me! :)

Milsters! this place is awesome! I was just here today with some friends!! OMG it was to die for and I was telling Carin as well hahaha xxx
ReplyDeleteAhhh! I grew up eating the Chinese-adapted version of those egg tarts (here they're called Pastel de Belém but I've also heard Pastel de Natal, which is similar) and I used to be able to eat a dozen of them in one sitting. My stomach was more elastic when I was little though. Meh.

The French really do know how to appreciate good food, even if it does leave customers queueing for a bit!
ReplyDeleteI think I need to make a similar rule as Carin - pastries only on the weekends!! Otherwise, living in this neighbourhood is going to be a disaster for my waistline! LOL
ReplyDeleteOh gosh, I'm afraid to say that my stomach is still elastic in my older age... I probably could gobble down 12 of those easily... Baaaaad.
ReplyDeleteYes they do indeed! It's a worthwhile enterprise for them :)
ReplyDeleteOh, I'm hoping (fingers crossed) to go to Portugal in March! Maybe I'll try this out as an introduction :)
ReplyDeleteHaha, I actually still can. Just now it doesn't feel so fine afterwards.
