Eiffel Tower Tuesday no. 46: Lost Amongst Rooftops and Chimneys

Sometimes life gets so busy, even in a city of flâneurs like Paris, that you can feel lost amongst the rooftops and chimneys and the general anarchy of everyday obligations.  Even if those obligations are in one of the most beautiful cities in the world.  Paris is no different from any other city in this regard, but often times many people never see this.  It's not one of the lovely, laudable aspects of the city, but it's one of its real aspects.  And when I have days or weeks like this - where I am busy and running around and trying to keep up with my own schedule - I remember that I actually live here, and that this reality, which could and does take place anywhere else in the world, is taking place for me here.  Sometimes getting lost in rooftops and chimneys is a way of getting grounded in the nitty-gritty of everyday life - rather than floating on cloud nine, which is easy to do in the City of Lights.  I'll come up for air at the end of the week, but until then, here's a little toast to nitty-gritty everyday life in Paris.

  1. Funnily enough the thing I'll miss most about the job I'm about to leave is the views over Glasgow city centre rooftops from my current office. I always told myself I'd take my camera in and get some shots, but never have in over 3 1/2 years!

  8. Sadly, I don't feel that way in São Paulo, which is why I won't be all that sad to leave. I did feel that way in Baires, though, and I feel that a lot in New York, that crazy bond with the city where you feel one with city and one with life and that everything is wonderful and amazing and the air is so sweet... right?

  9. It's another job in the city, but this time on the outskirts, although tantalisingly on the road to Loch Lomond, so I may feel the need to go up there more often with the camera! Unfortunately the weather's crap right now, so I couldn't get a photo if I tried :o(

  10. Hey there! I'd be curious to know why you don't feel like that about SP because it was one of the places I had thought of living before (not in any serious capacity, just as a bit of a daydream!).

  11. Oh! Sure! Well, I guess my primary complaint would be the total lack of anything green (perhaps I'm spoiled, because New York (where I'm from) has tons of trees) in any but the richest residential neighborhoods. Parks are rare and even just some trees and grass are hard to find. I guess really, it's just that the city doesn't have any particular energy or vibe of its own. I don't know how to explain it, really, apart from that - NYC definitely has its own vibes, Baires definitely has its own vibes, Paris has them - São Paulo is pretty neutrally city. It could literally be any giant, dirty city out of a comic book ever. The one perk is that it has tons of bars and restaurants to explore if you're big into going out, but the downside is that there is a lack of CHEAP bars and restaurants to explore. If you're thinking of settling around here I'd go for Rio. Or I hear good things about lots of other Brazilian cities, like Belo Horizonte and Salvador.
